Hello all, good to see you again here. Today we are here to know about the importance of title and description for a podcast and how to write them. Apart from your podcast cover art, many podcast listeners decide to choose a podcast, based on the title and description. This is one of the deciding factors for the organic growth of your podcast show.

What is a Podcast Title and why is it important?

The title or the name of the show should attempt to capture the essence of the show. This can be descriptive, playful, or a common thing that’s spoken on the show. A podcast title might be an afterthought to many creators. But they are vital to the success of a show. We generally invest a lot of time in creating the best content possible. But if the title gets less attention, it can lead to serious limitations on its reach and impact. So we need to think twice before choosing a title. Now we will travel through some of the considerations to be taken care of during title selection.

1. Relevant to content

Before starting a podcast you will be having a clear plan and aim behind the content. The title should match the aim or plan. For example, if you’re doing things like lists, comparisons, or case studies in your episode, then the title is going to pick itself or if it is an interview or a monologue, you might need to decide what is the most valuable part of the episode, and create your title around that.

2. Targeting audience

We have to think about our target audience before deciding on the title. We need to ask ourselves some basic questions to match with the niche of your audience such as:
a. What sort of terms are they searching for?
b. What questions are they seeking answers to?
c. How are you positioned to help them?

You need to make sure it is as clear as possible in your episode title that is exactly what they’re looking for. Podcast directories are essentially search engines, so make sure your titles are the sort of things that’ll show up in a search on that topic.

3. Size of the title

There is a wide variety of apps that acts as a platform for podcast delivery and these apps vary and demand different sizes. The most desirable size is between 40 to 60 characters.

4. Testing your titles

You can have a clear analysis of how the title is working, based on the statistics. Compare episodes with others released in the same period and look for patterns. Check if certain types of titles perform better than others.

Tips for a good title

1. Avoid using the term “podcast” in the title.

2. You can consider leaving the name of your podcast out of the episode title.

3. Avoid preloading the episode titles with numbers or codes.

4. Good examples of podcast episodes on the topic “ Top 10 best places to eat in Bangalore”
a. Top 10 best places to eat in Bangalore
b. Top 10 best places to eat in Bangalore |Episode 1
c. Top 10 best places to eat in Bangalore |PC001

7. Monitor your stats over time to see how various titles are performing

8. Don’t waste space – be as succinct as possible

Now we need to look at the next important part and the next part people look at when deciding to choose a podcast to listen to is the episode description.

What is a Podcast Description  and why is it important?

The podcast description has huge potential to get people to listen to your show. You may have got their interest with the title and now they want to know more about what the show is, so they will read the description. Start with your show’s subtitle. This should be a description of your show in 10 words or less. This will satisfy people who want a quick answer as to what the show is about. If they want to know more then we can intrigue them further with a more detailed explanation of what the show is about. This detailed explanation should have certain elements or requirements to sound better for a listener.

1. SEO friendly title and copy

As one of the main purposes of description is to appease search engines, it is important to follow SEO best practices. You need to target a specific keyword and it should be included in the key locations such as:
• Your page title
• The main heading
• A few subheadings
• The first 100 words of text on the first page and on the last page
• Scattered throughout the copy in reasonable places
• Your ALT images

2. A summary

The main goal is to convince the reader to listen to the podcast with a brief summary of the episode at the starting of the page. We need to attract the audience with a story, proactive statement, or a thought-provoking question.

3. Main points of the episode

We need to represent what we actually spoke in the recording with main points. One effective way to outline your main points is to add compelling quotes straight from your episode.

4. Bios of your guest

Providing a short introduction of guests. Link to their websites, social media profiles, books for sale, and other promotions

5. Links to your sources

Links to any data, quotes, tools, videos or sources that are mentioned in the recording. Providing links gives your listener the opportunity to verify the content you give and this increases the credibility of the podcast

6. Calls-to-action

Finish your description with some instructions to the readers such as to review your show, subscribe to your newsletter, and like your social media pages

7. Timestamps

Provide the timestamp to the Podcast episode with key topics

8. Skimmable text

Use clear and descriptive subheadings throughout your content. The main purpose is to help your readers find information, which convinces them to hit the play button. Generally a description is sized between 150-200 words.

Podcast listeners like to discover new shows through trusted friends or online communities, so we can make it easy for audience to share the podcast. The description doesn’t have to be hard. Though writing a description consumes time, it doesn’t supersede the benefits of the description.
