How to start a Podcast?

All you need to know on how to start a podcast is covered in this blog. Here is a step-by-step guide to starting your own podcast show.

Step 1: Decide the Topic

Your passion for the topic/idea of your podcast is the most important component of your podcast. Before you start, ask yourself if you’d be able to record at least 20 episodes consistently? If your answer is a yes then let’s get started.

Step 2: Show Format

There are different types or styles of podcasts, interview format, solo podcasts, and multi-hosts podcasts. Show format plays a major role in structuring your whole content. This helps your audience know what to expect in every episode. Many podcasts stick to one format but there are shows where they club two or more different formats in their show. One such example is Andrew Youderian’s podcast.

Step 3: Cover Art

It should consist of a clear picture that explains the podcast name, your image with a maximum resolution of 3000 pixels.

Step 4: Topic ideas

Think of at least 20 ideas for content you can discuss or 20 guests you can invite to your show

Step 5: Equipment

There are two types of microphones – Dynamic and Condenser

1. Dynamic – If you’re recording at your place and if your room is not soundproof we highly recommend you buy a dynamic microphone because it doesn’t pick up all the noise, not as sensitive as a condenser mic.

You can also buy an interface to directly record the audio and then take the audio from the interface and edit with your laptop, the advantage here is the quality of audio would be better. (This is an optional step)

2. Condenser – If you have a soundproof room, use a condenser mic, the sensitivity of the mic is more which means it picks up all the surrounding noise.

Cost- Rs. 4000 to Rs. 10,000/-

Apart from the mic you also require a pop filter, stand and shock mount.
A pop filter is used for reducing the puff sound or heavy breathing sound and explosive sounds.
A stand is used to fix the mic. (This would be absolutely your choice).
A shock mount is used to absorb the vibrations caused due to movement or due to furniture or when you accidentally hit the stand.

Step 6: Recording

Software

If you are a Windows user you download Audacity which is a free and open-source digital audio editor and recording application software. For Mac users, you have in-built software Garageband which is a line of digital audio workstations for macOS, iPad, and iOS devices that allows users to create music or podcasts.

Step 7: Audio production

Once you finish recording, listen to the audio and remove all the unwanted parts of the recording like ‘you know, hmmm, ahh and also look for cough, white noise. Look for audio clean, editing and mastering.

Step 8: Title and Description

Title – It should be clickable, catchy, not too long, avoid episode numbers.

Description – The potential listener decides whether to listen to the show or subscribe by reading the description. This explains to them what the show is all about. A clear description should explain to the listener what is in there for them. Don’t forget to have all the links in your show notes, music credits, relevant keywords

Step 9: Marketing and Promotions

Congratulations! You are just two steps away from putting your content in front of your target audience. Marketing and Promotions is the key to getting your content out to your potential listeners. Social media marketing is the most important form of marketing for podcasts. Promote your show on as many platforms as possible.
Major platforms are Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter. Be consistent with your marketing plan, and post regularly with the relevant content on different platforms. Here are a few content ideas you can use for promoting your show – audiograms, cross-promotion with other podcasters, get featured, get smart links, create short video clips, youtube videos, and have a clear call to action.

Step 10: Hosting and distribution

Just like website hosting, we need to have a hosting provider for podcasts- here are the suggestions- spreaker, anchor, podbean. Some of the hosting platforms have the facility to distribute to OTT platforms like spotify, jiosaavn, gaana, headphone, Castbox, google and apple podcast.
